The Adventure That Is Boating

by Chloe Gib

If you've been curious about Nashville boating, now is the time to take the plunge. After all, this is a city blessed with waterways, including the Cumberland River. It's been a wonderful form of recreation for thousands of people. There's no reason it should remain a secret to your family and friends.

The River has numerous, full service marinas where you can keep your boat docked. At most of them, the good times start before you ever take to the water. You'll find excellent food, casinos, and live music on the Riverfront. Take a nice breakfast before disembarking, and party when you return!

Maybe the quiet life is more your speed. If so, you can save some money and some bother at the same time, and buy a canoe. No marinas needed. Just strap it to the top of your car and head for the woods. Slowly paddling in Percy Priest lake or the Cumberland River by day, making camp by night - it's the perfect way to get back in touch with yourself.

You'll surely want to do some fishing. Hardly anything is more meditative after a hard work week than baiting a hook, casting it in the water, and waiting patiently for that big strike. Somehow fish always tastes better when it's off your own hook and off your own grill.

It might seem that speed boating would be a bit "busy" or superficial compared to that, but you might be in for a surprise. For some people, slowly paddling a canoe will never compare to the roar of engines, the wind in their hair, and the splash of parting water. If you've got a bit of daredevil in you, there's water-skiing, even hydro foiling.

If you want to take it to the ultimate thrill, hydrofoiling is difficult to top. But then there's white water rafting. The best place nearby for this adventure is the Middle Ocoee River. Be ready for the ride of your life. Strap your helmet on tight!

Then again, it's quite possible that a bit of grandeur is more appropriate. There's something to be said for you and someone special sharing an elegant evening. For that, there's nothing quite like a night out on a riverboat. With fine dining and live music right on board, slowly cruise all night to Opryland and back, taking in all the ambiance of Nashville boating.
